Charcoal Portraits
For centuries charcoal has been the medium of choice for art students learning to create “full tone” drawings. With charcoal artists are able to reproduce every tone on the value scale from rich dark blacks to the lightest shades of grey. In the Simi Studio where I studied in Florence, the Signorina believed that students should work in charcoal for three years before moving on to color in order to develop an eye sensitive to changes in value and light on forms.
